One thing I look for in a "novel of a certain size" is whether once I have entered into its world I have a desire to stick around. This is definitely one of those novels that I hated to see end. I found myself ravenously turning the pages only to be depressed that with each page I got closer to leaving this world which Lee Wyndham so skillfully (re)created."Defending Walls" is in fact a sequel to "Icy Pavements," the book which introduced us to our main protagonists: Peter Scudamore and Guyon de Chesnay. In "Defending Walls" their characters, backgrounds, and motivations are further elaborated upon, as their relationship (with each other as well as with other characters) also evolves and deepens. By way of comparison, I would say that this book moves a lot faster and is more action-packed from beginning to end, as compared to "Icy Pavements." If you have not read "Icy Pavements," you should go and do so immediately or else a life of deprivation and confusion will be yours. At times devastatingly beautiful, at times just devastating, this book is a genuine joy from beginning to end. Needless to say, I am really looking forward to Book 3!

A stripping of the 17th century to flesh and bone. This author has a style which may not always make us comfortable in its stark and uncompromising exposure of sexual and political mores of the time, and which is often designed to make the reader deliberately aware of the contrast between modern assumptions and latter-day deliberate collusion and concealment, but shows in all its various and varying forms the nature and the complex and painful decisions of love.
The choice between King and Country, faith and love, is brought to vivid life here, in glorious description that moves us from the very texture and inhabitance of the great stone walled halls of the Languedoc, to the airy and deceptively beautiful curves of Paris's Louvre.
Students and string and heresy, and the struggle of a Civil War far away and far too close, divide and bring together the heroes of this novel in a glorious coalescence that promises more to come.
