The New Neighbors eBook Simon Lelic
Londoners Jack and Syd found their dream home: lots of space, a great location, and a friendly owner who wanted a young couple to have it.Everything is exactly what they hoped for when they move in–except Jack makes a disturbing discovery in the attic, and Syd begins to wonder about the girl next door. And they each keep the other in the dark.
A mistake.
Because someone has just been killed outside their back door, and now the police are watching them.
This is their chance to prove they’re innocent–or to get away with murder.
Whose story do you believe?
My Thoughts: Alternating narrators tell the story of The New Neighbors. Jack and Syd have reasons to keep secrets. Now the past is creeping up on them, but what will happen before they are finally free?
The story goes back and forth in time, and just when we think we know what is happening, more of the past is revealed…and we are suddenly unsure of both Jack and Syd. Neither appears reliable, and the reasons for their secrets and lies add complex layers to the tale.
Syd has taken the young neighbor girl Elsie under her wing. When she sees how Elsie’s father treats her, she is reminded of her own terrible father, and about how she needed someone to step up for her. Being a protector feels like finally escaping the past.
Themes of controlling and violent fathers hover throughout the story; from Syd’s father to Elsie’s, we can see the damage that a bad father can do. Damage that will affect the daughters moving forward. But it is also possible for at least one damaged daughter to show strength and courage, finding a way to extricate herself from what might seem like a permanent nightmare.
Until the very end, I kept vacillating, trying to decide the truth. Even as the author threw different possible scenarios into the mix, I kept hoping that, finally, all would be revealed. 4.5 stars.

The New Neighbors eBook Simon Lelic Reviews
This story was very tough to read, too much back and forth, erratic and poorly constructed. Definitely not recommended. Characters are flat and forced.
Different storyline than many other books. A bit far-fetched though, which made the book a little less enjoyable. I would try another book by this author.
Dear Simon Lelic. I am not your best friend nor am I someone getting paid to listen to you. So why are you filling my ears with irrelevant and boringly repetitive trivia instead of providing me, in exchange for my hard earned cash, a STORY !!
I want to rate this book but not go into details. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
The premise seemed interesting but the characters and the story were not. I slogged through to the end anyway. It was mostly endless boring interior monologues, which is not my favorite style, but it actually suited the main characters who were so self-abdorbed, the rare times they communicated with each other they lied about everything. A forgettable book.
Mostly, this is the story of an evil abusive father & his violent emotionally unstable daughter trying to out wit one another. Each is seeking revenge & is determined to destroy the other. In the end, their dangerous game comes to a head.
Unfortunately the blurb wasn't really indicative of the plot, as some others mentioned. The book starts out well enough with a house showing, I'm partial to creepy house stories. But then narrative then lurches into "letters" written, for some strange reason, from the protagonists to each other, alternating POVs, flashbacks, flash forwards, etc. For whatever reason the author decided to tell the book in a zigzag instead of a line, and every chapter ends with a forward-looking reveal, and then a rewind back to how we get to that reveal. Honestly, it feels like the author read a bunch of books on how to write a thriller and then tossed it all into this book, none of the book really feels organic. Shame, because the blurb sounded good!
